Home Sealing
The exterior of your home is also called the "envelope" or shell. (See the orange line showing the envelope in the diagram to the left) The insulation, outer walls, ceiling, doors, windows, and floors all work together to control airflow in and out of the structure, repel moisture, and prevent heat from being lost or gained inside your home. A high-performance envelope helps maintain a consistent temperature even under extremely hot or cold conditions. The goal of Home Sealing is to improve the home envelope to make homes more comfortable and energy efficient.

Insulation
If your home is poorly insulated, it dramatically increases the amount of energy you need for heating and cooling. Energy loss happens through conduction (i.e. heat passing through walls, windows, doors, etc.) and infiltration (air leaking through cracks and gaps). Improving the efficiency of the building "shell" - to use industry lingo for the walls, roof and floors - can be one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to cut energy costs. For a relatively small investment, it is quite possible to increase the comfort of your home while reducing your heating and cooling needs by up to 30%

Weatherstripping
An important component in gaining increases in the energy efficiency of your home. A 1/8-inch air gap along the opening of a pair of 7-foot doors is equivalent to a 10 inch square hole in the wall. Would you leave a window half open during the coldest night of the winter or the hottest day of the summer?

Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation and the National Research Council of Canada have stated that air leakage and drafts can cause up to 40% of the heat loss from a building. That means that 40% of the money you spend to make the air in your house warm (or cool in summer) disappears through holes!

In a recent survey done by the Government of Canada for the Energuide program, 90% of the homes surveyed listed air barrier leakage as the major loss of heating energy.
